Originaire d'Europe et d'Asie occidentale et centrale, elle pousse dans les prairies humides et au bord des rivières. Elle a une très forte odeur poivrée. Il ne faut cependant pas la confondre avec la menthe poivrée (''Mentha × piperita''), qui est un hybride de la menthe aquatique (''Mentha aquatica'') et de la [[menthe verte]] (''Mentha spicata''). <br />
